Instrumenten / Ikoro (the big Ekwe)

In the olden days IKORO can only be heard from chiefs or kings palace, or at the meeting venues or place of the village. It means that there is an emergency at hand. In some villages tody, this tradition still remains the same.

When you hear the sound of Ikoro, which means that the men in that village must leave whatever they are doing to report to the chief. Through the sound, it can be determined what type of urgency it is, or if both men and women are requested to report.

In many occasion, it is the man who must report. And later he will go back to tell his wife or family what is all about if there is time for. Because if it is about a war, they do not have time to go back to tell their family. From that moment, they will be preparing and putting heads together how to defend their village. While the messenger will be sent out now from house to house to tell the families behind what it is all about.

At this situation, the messenger will not use the small ekwe. As they do not want the enemy to know that they are getting ready. Because every attack must be a surprise attack. With the sound of ikoro, you do not have time to react or to ask questions just like by the ekwe.
