Instrumenten / Smal Ekwe
In the olden days, ekwe had a function of what radio has now.
The king or the chief of a village used ekwe to communicate with the
town.
If there is anything the chief wanted to let the the villagers know, he would tell his messenger or town cryer the message.
The
messenger would now move with the ekwe
from street to street. after playing, he
would repeat what the king had asked him
to say. most of the times, it was to summon
the village men to report to the chief palace
that evening or early in the morning.
In some places in southeast of Nigeria, the chiefs normally played ekwe when they were
washing their hands early in the morning.
They used it to thank their god for the good and safe night they had.
and to ask them for protection for the coming day. |
